Takizawa Bakin, a popular writer of the Edo period ・ begins to tell his friend, the painter ・ Katsushika Hokusai, the story "Hakkenden" which he is conceiving.
It is an epic and bizarre tale of eight swordsmen with eight beads who, as if guided by fate, come together
to fight an epic battle in order to break a curse placed on the Satomi family. Hokusai is immediately enthralled.
And, curious about the rest of the story, he visited often to draw preliminary sketches that would inspire Bakin's creativity.
The story, which also fascinated Hokusai, became so popular that it was serialized for an unusually long time, but just as it reached its climax, Bakin lost his sight.
In the midst of the hopeless situation of completion, he receives an offer from his daughter-in-law to help him.
Even after losing his sight, Bakin continued to write "Hakkenden" over a period of 28 years.
